2011 – my little review

Hey guys!

2011 is nearly over and I somehow moved on to 2012 already :) So I think it’s time for my review of 2011! I wanna share my favorite photos and write a bit about 2011.

My favorite photos (and why I like them):

Sandra Trapp | March 2011

One of my first “real” photo sessions this year was the one with Sandra Trapp. From Jan to March I had so much to do with other stuff that I hardly ever had time to photograph. I met with Sandra and as it rained outside we spontaneously changed the location to her bedroom. There was a pink wall in her bedroom that we used as background. The above image was converted to black and white in post and dodged and burned a lot. The opinions where very divided as this is a low-key-high-key-mixture that not everyone liked. I like it and it shows again that you do not need a studio do photograph nice photos ;)

Johanna | Marvin | May 2011

I had dreamed about a romantic couple session at the river Sieg for a long time and searched for models. Finally, I found Johanna and Marvin who did a great joy (without even being a real couple :D ). Thanks again to Chris Schild for your Make-Up art!

Scherin Simo | Wedding dress| May 2011

Scherin was an agency model, too, and we met to photograph with a wedding dress. She is a gorgeous model and we had a lot of fun experimenting in the studio. I even tried Low Key what I until then never did (only in post).

Sebastian Kolb | June 2011

Photographing actor Sebastian Kolb was real fun! As he is an actor he could play with his face in an amazing way! The photo above shows him without acting though as he was distracted and laughed about something. This is why I love this photo!

Leander | July 2011

Photographing children is difficult even without camera issues but when I photographed little Leander my Canon 5DmkII’s autofocus system was broken and I had to focus manually. Nonetheless it was one of the photo sessions I enjoyed most. Leander was just so cute and totally fascinated by my camera and the hand puppet I used. He couldn’t even decide what to be astounded by more :)

Hochzeiten | photographed: 2009/2010 | retouched: 2011

Those two portraits were taken in 2009 but as I was searching for some wedding photos to build my katecouples portfolio I searched through my older weddings and retouched some of them. I asked all of my couples if I could use their photos for the portfolio. Two of them agreed and one of them were Sandra and Bernd. I love those above images because it was my first wedding and I remember what it was like to photograph it. All those emotions :)

This wedding photo was taken in 2010 and retouched while building my portfolio. Sadly I am not allowed to use any other photos from this wedding but it was a nice wedding nonetheless! The above photo is one of my all-time favorite wedding photographs.

Melanie | Bernd | September 2011

Since photographing Johanna and Marvin a few month had passed and I missed photographing couples as I enjoy it so much. Luckily I met Melanie and Bernd and we had a wonderful couple photo session. It was a short one because of the early sunset but nonetheless we produced a lot of really nice photos. It was one of my favorite photo sessions!

Patta | Nathalie | Couple photography workshop | October 2011

In October I teached a couple photography workshop in Bonn. Patta and Nathalie were a wonderful couple and my attendees were total fun! It was one of my highlights in 2011.

Scherin Simo | Fall | October 2011

You know Scherin from the wedding dress photo I shared earlier but we had agreed to work together again and met in October to photograph some candid shots and play with photos taken against the sun. One of my favorites from that day is the above because of the wonderful colors.

Vic | Xav | November 2011

I photographed and shared four couple sessions in November. One of them was the session with Vic and Xav at castle Augustusburg in Brühl. As the sun began to set while we photographed I could capture some really wonderful photos against the sun. The above is one of my all-time favorites.

Tine | Ben | November 2011

At the photo session with Tine & Ben I captured two of my favorites photos that I like for different reasons. The first one in my opinion shows their intimacy and happyness in a wondeful way. The second is a nice capture with wonderful surroundings. I love the trees!

Nicola | Roland | November 2011

To photograph my Mom was something really different for me. Of course I photographed some portraits over the years but never a complete session of candid captures. It was icy cold but nonetheless really nice (and when we photographed at home in front of the oven later that day it was really warm ;) ). What I like most of the above photo is the railings’ structure, the wide space and those two sitting at the corner of it holding each other.

Gisela | Alfred | November 2011

The most special photo session this year (and I think ever) was the couple session with Gisela and Alfred whom I met in Ludwigsburg at castle Monrepos. They are married for nearly 50 years now and still are totally cute and happy with each other. When I took this photo Alfred said something like “my freezing wife Gisela” and took her into his arms. Totally cute!

It don’t think I’ll photograph many sessions this month but I totally look forward to 2012!

If I look back at 2011 two other highlights come to my mind:

The first one is my talk at the multimedia conference where I talked about “Social media for creative lone wolfs”. I got really amazing feedback and it was a gorgeous day for me! By the way, I’ll be talking at at least one MMT next year ;)

The other one is my book “Retouching body and face with Elements 10″ that will be published in January but which I wrote this year. I am so looking forward to it :)

Look back at your 2011. Which were your highlights?

A wonderful advent time and a successful year 2012!

Love, Kate
